"Its not every day you can learn from an experienced glass master. Alan Toy's
presentations are informative and friendly."

Glass Art as a hobby is a very fulfilling and enjoyable pastime but it also involves many different aspects that need to come together correctly to realize your artistic vision. The need for properly choosing the correct materials, tools and techniques as well as properly executing creative and technical conventions can be a little daunting to novices.

To address this need we are creating a series of training DVDs and E-Books called “The Mind of the Artist”. Within this series of training materials, you'll find a wealth of valuable information that will shorten your learning curve and add to your enjoyment of making glass art.

Includes USPS 1st class shiping

This DVD was created for beginners without any background in glass fusing to help them get started with success minimizing the common mistakes.

Intermediate students will also learn why glass acts as it is heated and using this information better create technically sound work that can be easily repeated, something that always seems to be a challenge.
The reasons why common problems occur are explained in depth so that problems can be avoided and corrected if they do happen.
Instructions on cutting glass properly, cutting circles, drilling in glass, finishing fused jewelry, and setting up and understanding how to use kilns effectively are also included.

Video 2: Becoming a Better Glass Artist by Improving your Creative Abilities -
Approx. 52 minutes

$25.47
Includes USPS 1st class shiping

Alan Toy, a very experienced expert on kiln-formed glass with forty years of glass art experience takes you through the creation of a fused glass table setting. He not only covers the techniques used, but goes further into the design aspects.

What does any artist do after deciding on a concept? Alan explains how designs evolve by exploring artistic fundamentals such as line, pattern, shape, color and vertical and horizontal balance. He focuses on the special qualities of glass in order to make the best use of its transparency (and how layers of glass create depth of color), opacity and especially reflective aspects of art glass, dichroic and iridized glass.

As in music, the artistry of glasswork is enhanced when well thought out themes are linked artistically to its variations.

Ebook 1 - How to Make: Bird of Paradise Mirrored Panel - 5 pages

$4.47

Although this is a “beginner” project (not a lot of pieces and fairly easy cuts) you’ll be amazed at your finished work. The panel is composed of three layers to make it dimensional.

The bottom layer is a single piece of regular double-strength mirror. The middle layer is composed of a single piece of transparent turquoise glass surrounded by a frame of streaky green opalescent. The top layer consists of two bird of paradise flowers soldered on top of the middle layer. If you choose, you can even skip the mirror base layer by switching out the turquoise glass with either a piece of Schott GNA mirrored cathedral glass or a piece of Spectrum SilverCoat¨. Whichever way you choose the result will be a very dramatic and graceful presentation of the flowers, perfect for a wall in your foyer!

Koi are beloved in Chinese culture because of their beauty and grace. Did you know that the word for fish (Yu) in Chinese is a homonym for the word for fullness which is considered good luck?

This project will result in a beautiful plate with two Koi swimming gracefully, in a turquoise pool of water. They have been bred for centuries to accentuate different features such as color, shape and pattern. We are accentuating the eyes of our Koi and used dichroic glass for extra sparkle. We used a saw to help us give definition to the Koi body, fins and tail. Feel free to modify to your taste - just remember to keep your lines full of movement.
